Dear Seeker,

"If there is suffering in your heart, it is only because you have mistaken an unwanted intruder for an uninvited guest."

Special exercise: The doctor is NOT in

As they say, misery loves company! People love to find others who will listen while they complain about their lives and dump their sad tales of woe -- and more often than not, we nod and smile sympathetically even though inwardly we're rolling our eyes and can't wait to get away from them. There are many different exercises one can do in these situations, but this week simply try to see what it is in you that makes you listen while others vent. Are you pretending to care for fear of the other person's reaction if they see how you really feel? Are you afraid of your boss getting angry, or your mother giving you a guilt trip? Are you afraid of what you might see about yourself? That you don't care one whit about the other person's pain, or that you really think everyone else is an idiot? These are the truths that you want to uncover. Exposing these fears is the first step towards freedom from their compromising pain.
