Dear Seeker,
"During times of self-betrayal when we were hurting others or ourselves with negative inner states -- even though our eyes were open and all kinds of sensations were coursing through us -- we must have been asleep to what we were doing. We could not act against ourselves otherwise."

Special exercise: Where am I?
When we begin to see just how little time we spend in our own bodies, we start to understand why we have so many miscommunications, conflicts, and accidents in our lives. This week's exercise is to observe how often our minds and bodies are not in the same place. Like when I'm driving to work and going over a conversation I plan to have with my boss. Or when I'm on the phone with my brother and thinking about dinner. Every time I'm lost in thought -- good, bad, or neutral -- I am not in the present moment where my body is. And when I'm not in the present moment, my ability to deal with anything that happens in the present moment is greatly handicapped (usually to my detriment). Work to see the connection between inattention and the resulting unwanted events.
