Dear Seeker,

"The tree can't do anything about the wind that stirs its leaves and branches. But we human beings can choose what to do about what gets stirred in us."

Special exercise: Stop picking up hitchhikers

In any given moment, no matter what's going on, a quick internal check can be very revealing -- and rewarding. Simply ask yourself, how do I feel right now? Relaxed? Defensive? Apathetic? Nervous? Whatever your inner condition, it's likely that how you feel inwardly is determining your actions outwardly. By becoming aware of this connection between your feelings and your actions, you suddenly have a choice you didn't have just seconds before. You can consciously decide whether or not to go where your inner state is leading you. "Feeling the moment" allows for an instantaneous separation between you and what's pushing you -- which proves you are not your feelings, and need not be their vehicle, either. With this new understanding you can now stop picking up all unwanted hitchhikers!
