Dear Seeker,

"The great secret of getting ourselves unstuck, of being empowered to leave our problems behind, is to understand that before we learn to walk through whatever stands in our way, we must first take the step of learning to willingly enter into it."

Special exercise: Go through, not around

Our minds are very skilled at helping us to maneuver around problems rather than face them head on. This happens consciously and subconsciously throughout our day. You see someone you know at the grocery store and head down the nearest aisle before they see you. You find a thousand little projects to do at work, knowing that a bigger, more important project needs your attention. We think we're avoiding a person or situation, but what's really going on is that we're avoiding seeing something about ourselves. The next time you become aware of the fact that you're about to avoid someone or something, make the conscious decision to go through instead of around. Allow yourself to squirm and feel uncomfortable, knowing that these moments are the only chances you get to see more deeply into your fear. Let the situation reveal what you don't want to see -- that you fawn for the approval of others, or that you're unkind and judgmental. A willingness to see where you're "broken" is the first step towards being "fixed."
