Dear Seeker,

"The real spiritual journey begins with letting go of who we have been instead of calling upon it to be our travel guide."

Special exercise: Forget what you know

Isn't it interesting that we hardly ever have to think about our opinions, they're just right there at all times? We have instantaneous opinions about what people say, what they wear, how they should treat us, what we deserve, what we don't deserve. In fact if we could slow these moments way down, what we would observe is that it's almost like another voice whispers in our heads, "here's how you should feel about this." But it happens so quickly, so seamlessly, that we don't even question whether or not we have to feel that way. We don't see that we're actually being told how to feel by our minds -- based on how we were brought up, our past experience, and our desires. By passively listening to and accepting these thoughts, all we do is ensure that we never change. How can we be new if we always listen to our old, conditioned reactions? We must work instead to choose no reaction. In any instant where we find ourselves blaming someone or passing judgment or giving in to fear, we can choose to "forget what we know" and make room for a new, brighter, more peaceful and compassionate presence within us.
