Dear Seeker,

"To be more alert, we need only listen for and then let go of the thoughts that steal our attention."

Special exercise: Catch and release

Have you ever suspected that your mind is on a constant fishing expedition? Fishing for a way to make you feel excited, happy, confident, mad, depressed, worried, indignant, important, etc.? Like when you're having a perfectly fine day and then you randomly see a green car, which reminds you of something terrible that happened years ago -- and you instantly get into a funk. Or look at how easily we drift into daydreaming, browsing the internet, channel surfing in front of the TV... our minds incessantly looking for some kind of stimulation, positive or negative. This week, try to catch the moments when your mind has gone adrift, and work to release its grip on your attention. Catch and release, catch and release, over and over. As you persist with this exercise you'll slowly begin to reclaim your attention so that you can use it for whatever you choose, not for what your mind has chosen for you.
