Dear Seeker,

"Letting our plans for life take the place of actually living is like hoping to catch the delicate scent of a rose by flipping through a book on how to successfully grow a flower garden."

Special exercise: Skip the rehearsal

Here's something we all do -- we constantly rehearse conversations in our minds before they take place. We prepare explanations, ultimatums, persuasive arguments, apologies, reprimands, insults . . . to what end? Basically to ensure we get our way. If you're rehearsing a conversation in your head, it's because something "valuable" is at stake -- money, love, pride. Yes, there are times when practical preparation is prudent, such as for a presentation at work. But compulsively running any conversation over and over in your head in an attempt to control a future event actually makes you more vulnerable, not more powerful. Because now only one outcome will make you happy. That's a high-risk bet! Choose to skip the rehearsal and leave the world of imagination behind. Give yourself the chance to naturally respond to what actually happens, as it's happening. The results may surprise you -- and will certainly lead to a more genuine life.
