Special exercise: Keep in touch
This is a great exercise to do anytime you find yourself rushing or getting caught up in the surroundings and your emotions (like during this holiday week!). Here's the exercise: Work to actually feel whatever you're touching. When you are eating, become aware of the fork or spoon in your hand. When you are paying for something -- presents, groceries, gas -- feel the money or credit card as you hand it to the clerk. When you shake another person's hand, feel their grip. The more connected you are to your body as you interact with life, the more connected you are to life itself, and everything that's being communicated to you -- such as how your unconscious behavior is affecting others OR how their unconscious behavior is affecting you. In this way you can begin to take proper, conscious responsibility for yourself.
